after landing in zürich we passed through luzern on our way to grindelwald. in luzern we had lunch at a german oohm-pah styled cafe where the special was a bouillon soup with scallions and bread which normally wouldn't appeal to me much but seemed exactly right in this setting. roughly two blocks away i took my first photo in europe of the lion monument which was built in 1820 to honor the swiss soldiers who died on the steps of the tuileries palace while defending louis xvi during the french revolution in 1792.
