leaving tory channel on the interislander
|
for all their love of extreme sport, the achilles heel of new zealanders appears to be the ferries that run the route across cook strait.
before making the trip ourselves we heard countless tales of the ships being full of folks 'heaving their hearts out' as the boats bob and pitch in the swell. when you board the ferry you find white paper 'sickness' bags at nearly every door lending some credence to the trip being a true test of sea worthiness.
two days before our scheduled return a storm moved in and the forecast for our trip included 30 knot gales and a 10 meter swell. my enthusiasm for this forecast was matched only by natalie's dread.
but they don't do weather here any better than anywhere else in the world and you can see we left the south island behind on placid seas.
